A spin-off of DJ and MC battles, VJ Battle was concieved in 2002 with the world premier bout held during SIGGRAPH 2003 and sponsored by Edirol, ATi and IdN. VJ Battle has been held every year since and has been used as a model for numerous VJ Battle events worldwide.

The formation is as follows:
2 Artists head to head on two screens; 1 DJ plays a 3:30 minute track. [The first 30 seconds are not judged.] At the end of 3 minutes the audience will judge the two artists by using cell phones to send a text message choosing their VJ of choice. A graph will appear on the screen showing the outcome of the votes. The winning artists will advance to the next round.

The audience judges by:
Composition
Original style
Visual interpretation of the music

Rules:
VJs must mix between at least two sources of video [either software or hardware].
No single premixed clip played by itself for 3 minute.
Artists must provide their own playback devices.
No teams or collectives-- Individual VJs only.
Maximum number of input sources is 4 [This is to speed up transitions between sets].
The artist’s signal will be routed for them to the projectors.
The musical style for each round will be announced before the round begins.
